When educators understand the science behind teaching practices they can more readily incorporate them into their daily instruction, says The Cult of Pedagogy’s Jennifer Gonzalez. In her podcast and accompanying post, Gonzalez highlights the four key teaching strategies researcher Pooja Agarwal and K-12 teacher Patrice Bain feature in their new book, Powerful Teaching: Unleash the Science of Learning. They explain the science behind the suggestions, many of which are familiar, as well as best practices and applications for each one:

Retrieval practice: The goal is for students to recall information from memory and reinforce learning through quick daily assessments. Evidence shows that actively accessing learned material—rather than merely reteaching it—boosts retention.

Bain decided that daily mini-quizzes were a better way than her regular homework assignments to engage students in retrieval practice. “So many students have absolutely mastered homework,” Bain says. “They look at a question, they look up the answer, they write it down and repeat. They get good grades, but they can’t retrieve the information; it’s difficult to discuss the next day, a week later.” The quick quiz assessments kept her finger on the pulse of what her students knew and where the gaps existed. The change not only increased students’ ability to retain information but saved Bain time from grading stacks of homework.

Spaced practice: Spaced practice is the simple strategy of returning to learned material repeatedly over time. “You could call these throwback Thursdays or throwback Tuesdays or you just simply ask students, hey, what did we do last week?” says Agrawal, suggesting a variety of ways to frame the strategy for students.

Retrieval isn’t just about things that have been covered recently. It’s also important that teachers are “asking students to retrieve information a few days, weeks, or even months after they learned it,” Gonzalez writes. “Because that information is harder to recall, it actually makes the learning that comes from it that much more durable.” Half the battle is simply being intentional about the approach: Teachers can easily implement the practice by separating material into digestible bites and scheduling spaced instruction throughout the coming weeks and months.

Interleaving: Students learn better when they can’t easily predict the answer to the next question. Interleaving is the practice of throwing curve balls, mixing up your lessons in ways that resist easy pattern recognition—and forcing students to adapt on the fly. Agrawal offers an example where students are learning to multiply and divide fractions: Presenting questions so that some are multiplication and some are division requires students to stop and think about which strategy to use.

Those moments of thoughtful reflection enhance learning, Agrawal says. Teachers can use the practice in any classroom by intentionally and regularly shifting between the types of material and topics they cover.

Feedback-driven metacognition: In this quick practice, students assess what they already know so they can focus their studying on what they have not yet learned. Bain uses her mini-quizzes for this strategy: once the quiz is over, she goes over the answers so students can immediately see where their strengths and weaknesses lie.

When she returns the graded quizzes the next day, she asks the students the same questions again—requiring them to recall and explain the answers and address their learning gaps. Sometimes Bain pairs students to discuss previous lessons referenced by the quiz to reinforce the learning.

None of the strategies are difficult or time-consuming—and many are already employed by teachers, Gonzalez writes. Understanding how they function in the classroom enhances the ability to use them more frequently and in a more integrated way.

The last few weeks of high school are an exciting time for students. It's a whirlwind of graduation parties and festivities, topped by the graduation ceremony itself. But it can also be overwhelming.

Whatever path a student is considering, college or career, the summer after high school is the perfect time to start planning for the road ahead. I've gathered some resources you can share with students that are fun, easy-to-use and offer guidance for what lies ahead. They're organized by topic.

  1. Planning Your Career Path and Major: Although seniors have likely contemplated their major or have a plan for entering the workforce, it never hurts for them to start thinking about a five-year plan. Here are some resources for generating ideas and planning:
  2. Financial Planning and Scholarships: I remember how overwhelming it was when I started researching financial aid, scholarships, and student loans. Each of these resources includes great information about securing financing for college and budgeting:
  3. Getting Ready to Live On Your Own: Whether its a dorm or a first apartment, living on your own is certainly one of the biggest changes after high school. Along with the freedom comes a lot more responsibility. Here are some fun resources that can help students prepare:
  4. Write Your Resume: By senior year, many students have been introduced to resume writing. But once they've graduated, it's an important skill to master. For students entering the workforce and also for incoming freshmen, a well-written resume can open a lot of doors.
  5. Spend Some Time Preparing Mentally for College or a Job: Of course, graduates should enjoy the summer after high school. But it only lasts a short time. They should also remember to spend some time getting ready for the next chapter.

Here's what high school wrestlers put themselves through for those medals — and why

When Parkside junior Michael Daugherty wakes up in the morning, he dreams about walking into his kitchen and feasting on a breakfast spread of pancakes, sausage, bacon and eggs.

Instead, Daugherty normally goes into his cupboard and finds a granola bar for his morning meal, waiting until lunch for a salad before eating plain chicken most nights for his final meal of the day.

“Nothing too fancy,” Daugherty said with a chuckle. “I try to watch how many carbs I have.”

He said it can be hard, especially when he hangs out with his friends and watches them chow down on junk food like cheeseburgers and fries, but it’s the life Daugherty has chosen and it’s the one he’s lived for nearly a decade.

Daugherty is a member of the Parkside wrestling team, competing in the 138 weight class. He has wrestled since he was 6 years old, when his father asked if he wanted to get involved in one of the local programs on the Shore.

Finding an immediate love for the sport, Daugherty spent the next several years learning and training, hoping to compete in the state tournament at the high school level, and eventually go on to wrestle in college.

Surely not? Could Samoa Joe be setting himself up for a shock babyface turn after the events on last night’s Raw?

For those who haven’t seen, Joe came out to the ring to demand an apology from Roman Reigns for suspecting him as the culprit of last week’s attack. Joe then heard that Roman was arriving at the building, so said he would go and get the apology himself.

As Joe was approaching Roman, a silver car came outta nowhere to ram into Roman’s car. You can check out what happened below.

While this is all very interesting, it was the moments after the attack that have really sparked the interests of fans.

Joe, completely out of character, shows real concern for Roman’s safety, urging (sorry Lance) Roman to stay down and not move while making sure the door was properly open to give paramedics access to Roman.

Could this be a way to introduce Joe as a babyface? While his heel character was scary, he never actually won anything, so perhaps a new character is what he needs.

Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross are your new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions after winning a four-way elimination match on Raw tonight.

Defending champions The IIconics were eliminated first by Mandy Rose. They had held the titles since WrestleMania 35 in April this year.

That left Rose & Deville, the Kabuki Warriors, and Bliss & Cross.

Despite some good teamwork from ‘Fire & Desire’, Rose tapped out to the Asuka Lock, leaving the Kabuki Warriors and Bliss & Cross two-on-two to determine the next champions.

It first looked as if the Kabukis had it done when Asuka locked Bliss in the Asuka locked. Alexa rolled it into a pinfall though and Asuka kicked out at two.

Shortly after, Cross took out Asuka allowing Alexa to land Twisted Bliss on Sane for the win.

Bliss & Cross are the third WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions (in its current iteration) after Sasha Banks & Bayley and The IIconics.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson could still make a return

The Rock says he publicly admitted for the first time that he has retired from wrestling.

But the Hollywood mega-star has left himself open for a return to the squared circle.

The 47-year-old has been busy promoting new film 'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw' recently and earlier this week was named the highest-aid actor for 2019 by Forbes - racking in a cool $124million.

However, speaking on Live with Kelly and Ryan in the States, the eight-time WWE champion admitted: "I miss wrestling. I love wrestling.

"I quietly retired from wrestling because I was lucky enough to have a wonderful career and accomplish what I wanted to accomplish.

"But there's nothing like a live crowd, live audience, live microphone."

Real name Dwayne Johnson, The Rock, a sure-fire future hall-of-famer, has come and gone from the company a number of times in recent years, with Hollywood commitments taking precedence.

His last big feud in the company came with John Cena - culminating at WrestleMania 29, while his last official match took place at WrestleMania 32 - an impromptu bout that saw him defeat Erick Rowan in just six seconds.

He also discussed his WWE debut back in 1997.

Then known as Rocky Maivia - combining the names of his grandfather and father - he starred at Madison Square Garden in an old-school Survivor Series match 22 years ago."I had my very first match ever in the WWE in Madison Square Garden. It was a big pay-per-view and, it's funny because I credit my journey in pro wrestling to getting me to where I am today — especially that particular night.

"Generally, your first match, you have it in a small town, small crowd, non-televised. This is Madison Square Garden, sold out, one of the biggest pay-per-views of the year, Survivor Series.

Predictably, WWE lost complete interest in the women’s division once Ronda Rousey left after WrestleMania 35.

However, it seems that it could soon be revived as Natalya has said that Ronda “definitely wants to come back” to WWE.

Speaking to the New York Post, Natalya said:

“Ronda I think misses it a lot. I think that she misses it. I think that she definitely wants to come back, but I think that she’s so focused on having a family and that’s something. … When Ronda makes a promise to somebody, she stands by her word. And she really wants to have a family and she’s really focused on that with her husband Travis.

“So I believe that that right now is her main focus, but I also think she still has a lot of unfinished business is WWE and so, for me, because she kind of fell in love with it more than she even realized she would, I think she’ll be back, but it’s all about timing and I just think her family is coming first right now and I think every woman can relate to that.”

She also admitted that her November 2018 Raw match with Ronda Rousey was completely improvised (which explains a lot).

“We got to call that match in the ring, and very few women can do that. And I’m proud to say we called an 18-minute match in the ring with literally just our passion. And I don’t think Ronda even knew she could do that.

“To me, I was so impressed with her in that night that she was able to just go without having to have practices or rehearsals, no. She and I literally walked through the curtain, met each other in the ring and we just went. We wrestled. We wrestled our hearts out, and by the end of it, both of us were covered in blood, sweat and tears. But that’s what this industry is all about, and Ronda showed me that night she belonged.”

The guessing games continue! Just who did attack Roman Reigns with a pile of scaffolding on this week’s SmackDown Live?

Could it be Samoa Joe, who Roman seems to have been feuding with? Or perhaps Buddy Murphy, who was spotted by eagle-eyed viewers walking away from the scene of the crime.

Or could it have been Daniel Bryan? That’s the latest rumour anyway, as the latest advertisements have Roman Reigns going up against Bryan at several WWE events in the aftermath of SummerSlam.

The two are scheduled to go face to face at Madison Square Garden in early September, as well as the upcoming WWE live event at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, Arizona on September 28.

Bryan has been teasing a “career-altering” announcement over the past few weeks and has spoken about going to places he’s never been before. Could the place he’s never been before the hardware store to pick up wrenches to loosen scaffolding?

“Yes, that’s the real guy from “Black Panther” a mother told her young son outside Dave & Buster’s, announcing the entrance of Michael B. Jordan who had just stepped onto the orange carpet with his mother Donna at Saturday’s 3rd annual MBJAM, an event he hosts to benefit Lupus LA.

Though the actor plays the villain in that Marvel film, he is quickly becoming known as a hero off-screen. In recent years, the actor has used his celebrity to advocate for voter registration — and Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams — in addition to adopting an inclusion rider for all entertainment projects he produces. But lupus is a cause especially dear to the actor’s heart since his mother was diagnosed with the disease when he was young.

“It’s a huge deal honestly. If all of us use our platform to get the word out there, it’s a huge deal,” Jordan told Variety, explaining that lupus is something that a lot of people don’t know enough about. “I think education and bringing awareness to it is half the battle, and then I think once it becomes not normalized, but since it becomes more common, I think people will start to gravitate towards it and try to fix it.”

“If you find just causes to get behind, that really speak to your heart and your soul and to be able to use a platform to support that is a great tool to have,” he continued.

Guests including Jamie Foxx, Storm Reid, Lilly Singh, Omari Hardwick, NBA Star Kyrie Irving, Miles Brown, Niles Fitch and Kellie Martin joined the actor to support the cause. Gymnast Laurie Hernandez also took a break from training for the 2020 Olympics to attend and meet Jordan for the first time: “We just want to make sure everybody knows, you’re not alone.”

“Once you get that platform [of celebrity], it’s an assumed responsibility that you have to pick and choose causes and different ways you’re going to speak about the things you feel need to be heard,” she told Variety. “And Michael’s used that to talk about lupus and about his mom, and I think that’s really such a sweet thing. It’s inspiring.”

Inside the event, emcee Nick Cannon shared stories about his own battle with the disease. Cannon told the crowd of nearly 500 — including 250 “lupus warriors” and their families — that Lupus LA Ambassador Toni Braxton was one of the first to reach out to him after his diagnosis with lupus nephritis in 2012.

“Knowing that someone was there that understood what I was just beginning to go through, someone who’s been on that journey with lupus and was able to let me know about the ups and downs — the times when you can’t get out of bed and you can’t move or you can’t stay out in the sun as much as you want to — the fact that she would check up on me every time I would be in the hospital, it went beyond just a colleague or someone in the industry that cared,“ Cannon shared. “I consider her family.”

Cannon also shared that lupus brought him and Jordan together, praising the philanthropic star for his work, saying “the fact that someone of his statue, someone of his prominence…that he takes that light and shines it on something that doesn’t often get a lot of attention” deserves recognition.

It’s good to see Vince McMahon understand that for his World Wrestling Entertainment empire to take a step forward, he needs to take a step back.

After offering excuses for WWE’s poor creative product on previous earnings calls, the WWE CEO wisely acknowledged Thursday that two new hires he made earlier this month freed him up “to look at longer range story arcs and work on character development, versus being in the weeds.”

Although the future looks brighter, the present is still a little dim. With another lackluster quarterly earnings report on the books, WWE attempted to mask its poor performance during its Q2 earnings call by focusing on the new overseers, Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff, of his primetime series on USA and eventually Fox.

The decision to create two new executive positions is just what McMahon needs to position himself to take a more strategic view of the WWE product, allowing the wrestling company to refresh their output, or as McMahon put it, “relaunch in terms of our content.”

McMahon is making a smart move here, by allowing others to focus on the day-to-day while he turns his attention to what matters most: captivating storytelling in the long term. He has long been feted for his ability to develop characters which tap into the national id, from Hulk Hogan in the 1980s, Stone Cold Steve Austin in the 1990s and John Cena in the 2000s.

But despite their best attempts, WWE has arguably not yet found their audience lightning rod in the 2010s. Now McMahon is going to be able to put more effort into creating that next big character.

The market appears to be buoyed by that news, and the announcement that WWE will be releasing a tiered subscription system for their WWE Network SVOD product. The stock is currently up 10% from closing the day before the call.

But the stock increase ignores the fact that current revenue continues to trail 2018’s levels, and key market engagement metrics also all continuing to be down on a yearly comparison.

WWE’s revenue ($268.9 million) and operating income ($17.1 million) were down from Q2 2018, by 5% and 19% respectively, along with a decline in ratings, WWE Network subscriptions and merchandise spend. One bright spot was that net income had slightly increased from last year’s level by 4% to $10.4 million.

The company put the best possible face on the numbers by noting the declines were shrinking, pointing out that lower ratings at the end of the quarter were not as steep as the ones that began it. So far, it seems to have worked.

In another creative refresh, McMahon stated on the call that WWE would be increasing the edginess of the storylines, but staying within the parameters of a PG rating. This is a smart move to attempt to lure back lapsed fans who may be bored with the current product’s tame/non-existent stories, and lured to new wrestling company AEW, which carries a TV-14 rating.

On that note, the WWE head also decried AEW’s recent focus on what he dubbed “blood and guts” and stated that the WWE “is just not going back to that gory crap that we graduated from.”

TNT, home of AEW’s new show, announced this week it would be airing on Wednesdays starting October 2nd, directly against WWE’s own NXT show on their SVOD service, and two days before “SmackDown” moves to Fox.

In an interesting twist prior to the earnings call, seven top WWE Executives, including Vince McMahon, daughter Stephanie Levesque, son-in-law Paul Levesque and both Co-Presidents, sold $23 million worth of stock on Monday. The shares were priced at $70.23 that day, 9% lower than the current price of $76.52, meaning they collectively missed out on additional $2.4 million by not waiting to sell until a day after the call.

During the call, WWE co-president George Barrios re-iterated the WWE’s stance that absences to key performers was the key behind 2019’s diminishing ratings for shows “Raw” and “SmackDown.” WWE went on to say in the call that, with the return of the superstars, ratings improved in May and June, which were not as far behind 2018 levels as April was.

In another ratings spin, Barrios mentioned this week’s episode of “Raw,”  a special packed with former stars dubbed Raw Reunion, had an audience 15% greater than the “Raw” airing a year before. This is not the fairest comparison, given last year’s July 23rd episode was just a regular episode, not a special. The fairest comparison would be against the last “Raw” reunion special, Raw 25, airing on January 22, 2018.

Raw Reunion drew an audience size 1.4 million people lower than Raw 25. This suggests that WWE has lost a large number of casual viewers over the last year or so, especially when taken with the context that the “Raw” episode  after Wrestlemania also drew 1 million fewer viewers than 2018.

Furthering the idea of a decline among casual fans, WWE acknowledged during the call that its live event attendance, fan spend and WWE Network paid subscriptions were all below 2018 levels. These are organic measures of interest. With fewer and fewer dedicated fans watching, going to events and buying swag, it suggests the issue with the ratings has been long in the making and glossed over until now.
