When we talk about business, admin and entrepreneurship, we’re talking about a whole range of jobs in a whole range of sectors. There are so many different pathways to these jobs, including through VET, university and on-the-job training. So let’s talk about the VET options.

What is VET?

VET stands for Vocational Education and Training, which is an education pathway that’s focused on gaining practical skills and providing you with a nationally-recognised qualification, ranging from a Certificate I to Certificate IV, to a Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate.

A VET course is similar to a university degree in that you spend a chunk of your time getting qualified for a real-world career, but it’s generally shorter, less theoretical and more hands-on, and more work-focused. You can complete a VET course at TAFE or another registered training organisation (RTO). Statistically, those who complete a VET course, have higher rates of employment and, on average, get paid slightly better than university graduates.

Why is VET relevant to the industry?

VET courses offer a whole bunch of very specific training for those with career aspirations in the wide range of jobs associated with business, admin and entrepreneurship. Whether you want to start your own business, work in the accounts department of a company or work on business strategy with the big wigs, there’s definitely a VET course to get you started.

Roles in business are super flexible and there are plenty of pathways that can be pursued as a long term, stable career. The cool thing about this sector is that you can enter it from any direction and the career progression is pretty much limitless.

Universities offer bachelor’s degrees in business management but VET courses tend to be more specified to a particular job title. VET courses also tend to have more variety in length, taking anywhere from a couple of weeks to four years for an apprenticeship. In considering VET, you want to ask yourself how long it will take, how much it will cost, how practical it is and the employment outcomes afterwards.

What are some courses that I can do?

One of the most appealing parts of VET is that the courses are generally shorter and cheaper than a bachelor’s degree. Rather than doing a 3-year degree, the tendency is to do a short course in order to get qualified and then learn more while on the job. As you progress through your career, you can then upskill with more VET training. Alternatively, many people turn to a VET course before or after they’ve completed a university degree in order to enhance their skills and gain more practical experience. Here are a few examples of training courses, from entry-level to advanced:

  • Certificate III in Accounts Administration (Entry Level)

This course is designed to equip you with the skills and qualifications to become a payroll and accounts clerk, an admin officer or a bookkeeper. It’s a year-long, entry-level program with a focus on keeping tight numbers and applying them to the relevant aspects of business. Over 80% of those who complete the course are satisfied with it and there are between 25,000 and 50,000 job openings in the next 5 years, so job security is awesome.

See stats and outcomes.

  • Certificate IV in New Small Business (Trade Level)

This course is all about equipping students with the skills to take that leap and start your own business. It’s an 11-month program that covers leadership, team management and problem solving for the business world. More than 86% of graduates are satisfied with this course and 61% receive job-related benefits from training.

See stats and outcomes.

  • Diploma of International Business (Advanced Level)

This course is suited to those who’ve already got some business experience or training under their belt and want to be able to take their business game to an international level. In a nutshell, you’ll be learning what it takes to manage and organise businesses that operate internationally in all different kinds of industries. You’ll learn the leadership skills it takes to manage staff across borders, and a job with these qualifications will likely give you the opportunity to travel for work.

See stats and outcomes.

What are the career outcomes?

The job titles associated with business, admin and entrepreneurship are many and far reaching. Here are a couple of examples to kick start your imagination:

Account executive, administrative assistant, administrative manager, business analyst, financial analyst, investment advisor, investment banker, investor relations officer, loan officer, mortgage banker, portfolio manager, ratings analyst, stockbroker, compensation analyst, employee relations specialist, HR coordinator, staffing consultant, business systems analyst, content manager, content strategist, database administrator, digital marketing manager, full stack developer, information architect, marketing technologist, mobile developer, project manager, social media manager, software engineer, systems engineer, software developer, systems administrator, web analytics developer, web developer, office manager, operations manager, risk manager, assessor, auditor, bookkeeper, budget analyst, chief financial officer, tax specialist, treasurer.

If you’re keen on getting into Business, Admin or or Entrepreneurship through VET, then you should check out Foster’s story here. Foster got a super high ATAR, but decided uni wasn’t for him and went down the VET path instead. Head here to find out a bit more about him.

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

Business, admin and entrepreneurship are all about creating efficient processes. There’s a whole range of job titles that come from these industries, from owning your own business to working as a recruiter to managing a sales team. Generally, roles in the field of business are suited to people who aren’t afraid to take a few risks and lead the pack. Another massive aspect of good business is good communication across all the different mediums.

Will it suit me?

Business requires a whole range of skills, but in general, business people are self-motivated and highly driven to achieve their goals. Because it’s such a self-directed vocation, you really need to set your goals, then take responsibility for achieving them. Another important trait for business is the ability to communicate your plans to other people, such as your clients, contractors and staff. If this sounds like you, chances are you could find yourself working in some capacity of business.

What jobs can I do?

Account executive, administrative assistant, administrative manager, business analyst, financial analyst, investment advisor, investment banker, investor relations officer, loan officer, mortgage banker, portfolio manager, ratings analyst, stockbroker, compensation analyst, employee relations specialist, HR coordinator, staffing consultant, business systems analyst, content manager, content strategist, database administrator, digital marketing manager, full stack developer, information architect, marketing technologist, mobile developer, project manager, social media manager, software engineer, systems engineer, software developer, systems administrator, web analytics developer, web developer, office manager, operations manager, risk manager, assessor, auditor, bookkeeper, budget analyst, chief financial officer, tax specialist, treasurer, business owner, entrepreneur.

How can I get there?

Universities offer a whole range of different degrees in business, administration and entrepreneurship. However, it’s become quite common for those entering the business and finance sectors to skip university altogether and get an internship or a diploma from TAFE (or another training organisation). Some people even start their own businesses from the ground up, without any previous training or experience. Essentially, there are myriad pathways to a career in business, and with a bit of forward thinking and dedication, you can tread your own.

Is it a good industry?

Business is such a broad term that it encompasses pretty much every industry. All organisations need good business people in order to function efficiently and effectively. In general, working in business is seen as pretty glamorous industry, with dapper outfits and long, boozy lunches, but it can also be quite demanding and stressful. As the world changes, so does the way we do business, so be prepared to constantly adapt to market and industry changes.

More than 100 landmarks across the UK from Buckingham Palace to Edinburgh Castle are switching off their lights to mark this year's Earth Hour.

The lights will go off at famous buildings and structures across the country between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday as part of the international event organised by conservation charity WWF to urge action to save the planet.

Sydney Opera House, Egypt's Great Pyramids, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Brazil's Christ the Redeemer monument and the Empire State Building in New York are among the sites worldwide where the lights will be switched off.

The event sees landmarks, businesses and people switching their lights off for an hour of darkness, and aims to highlight the impacts humans are having on the planet through climate change, pollution, plastic and food production.

More than 7,000 cities in more than 170 countries and millions of people are expected to take part this year, to send a message to leaders that protecting the Earth should be top of their agenda, WWF said.

In the UK, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and the Shard, Cardiff Castle, Liverpool Cathedral, Old Trafford, Brighton Pier and the Eden Project are among the landmarks taking part.

Last year across the UK, 10 million people took part, along with more than 7,000 schools, 400 landmarks and thousands of businesses and organisations, the charity said.

WWF warns that people living today are the first generation to experience the effects of climate change, and the last to be able to change it, while the planet is also suffering plastic pollution and deforestation.

The charity is encouraging people to pledge personal actions as part of this year's Earth Hour, such as turning the washing machine down to 30C, avoiding single-use plastics, planning a staycation or holiday nearer to home, changing the way they eat or helping restore nature in their local area.

Article published from The Independent

WWF is urging Australians to participate in Earth Hour 2019 and switch off their lights for one hour to show their support for Australia to get back on track to meeting its international climate change commitments.

In signing the 2015 Paris Agreement, Australia committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 26% on 2005 levels by 2030. However, the Government’s latest report shows Australia is on track to reduce emissions by only 7% by this time.

Earth Hour is also an opportunity for Australians to call for urgent action to halt biodiversity loss. Globally, species have declined by 13% per annum since 1970. In Australia, the situation is worse with iconic species such as the koala declining by 21%.

WWF began Earth Hour in Sydney in 2007 and each year thousands of Australians and businesses show their commitment to our environment by turning off their lights.

Last year, a record 18,000 landmarks in 7,000 cities around the world participated as part of their activities to call for action to reduce the causes of climate change.
