Coronavirus’ full economic impact is yet to be seen but workers are already preparing themselves for possible quarantine measures.

Australians are madly stocking up on supplies in case the disease forces them into a two week isolation.

Meanwhile government and businesses are trying to find the best ways to support affected employees in case it’s no longer safe or viable for them to work.

Not all jobs have the same exposure to coronavirus however, and workers in some industries are more susceptible to its economic impacts than others.

James Caldwell, senior industry analyst with IBISWorld, told The New Daily which five industries face the greatest risks.

Number 1: Airlines

Demand for flights has plummeted since coronavirus first started infecting tourists, and government travel restrictions have further weighed on that.

Qantas has already scaled back its number of flights, forcing 2000 surplus workers to take paid leave if they want to receive an income in the intervening time.

Fortunately for employees in this industry, Mr Caldwell said, there are several factors which could protect their jobs in the long run.

“Staff in this industry are highly unionised and they have a lot of benefits,” he said.

“They don’t have a lot of casual workers, plus, when this virus ends these workers are going to be needed and it’s very expensive to hire in this industry.”

These features mean airline staff are less likely to lose their jobs if the pandemic becomes a prolonged issue.

Number 2: Freight and transport

“Australia is a trading nation, and China is Australia’s biggest trading partner,” Mr Caldwell said.

That’s a big problem for the people moving goods between the two nations as the disease has caused many Chinese factories to close.

With few goods in need of transportation, demand for drivers has fallen.

Luckily, a recent fall in oil prices means freight businesses will have a little extra money to hand, reducing the likelihood of lay-offs.

Number 3: Retail

Australia’s retail sector is already in the midst of a so-called ‘apocalypse’ and coronavirus is tapped to make things worse.

“This outbreak has had a big impact on consumer confidence and there’s a lot of talk about a recession,” Mr Caldwell said.

“If we enter a recession, people are going to cut back on discretionary spending and that can really only harm the retail industry.”

Worryingly, many workers in the retail sector are employed on a casual basis and have no access to paid sick leave.

Mr Caldwell added that casual workers can also be “dispatched at the drop of a hat”.

“We’d see job layoffs there,” he said.

Number 4: Hotels

The summer bushfires took an axe to the tourism sector, and now coronavirus threatens to pour salt in those still-fresh wounds.

“With the bushfires this year, Australian tourism has already contracted and now there are travel bans in place on a list of countries,” Mr Caldwell said.

“If these travel bans are extended further, we’ll probably see the closure of hotels or at least job layoffs.”

Many hotel staff are also employed on a casual basis, and face similar challenges to retail workers.

Number 5: Restaurants

Eating out might be a nice way to spend an evening, but it’s an expense Australians are expected to cut back on as talk of a recession builds.

As consumers tighten their belts staff employed in the restaurant world will feel the squeeze, Mr Caldwell said.

Like retail and hotel workers, many of the hard-working Australians employed by these businesses are casual staff.

The jobs with the highest exposure to diseases

This table breaks down different jobs by how regularly those workers are exposed to diseases in the course of their normal duties.

Fossil fuel power generation a winner

Australians employed in fossil fuel power generation will become essential to the economy during the outbreak.

That’s because China’s factory shutdown has reduced the damend for coal, forcing the commodity’s price down.

As a result, coal-fired power plants have been given a competitive cost advantage over renewable energy production, which until recently was cheaper than coal.

Ensuring an uninterrupted power supply will be essential for the increasing number of people electing to work from home or forced to self isolate.

How to prepare financially

Workers who have contracted coronavirus, or who suspect the may have been infected, need to isolate themselves for two weeks.

For full-time and part-time workers, this typically means eating up two weeks of paid sick leave.

Workers employed on a casual or short-term contract basis face the daunting prospect of losing two weeks of income (leaving many unable to cover their basic expenses.

In either case, having money tucked away would be immensely helpful – yet the 2019 Financial Consciousness Index Report by Deloitte found only 32 per cent of households have emergency funds set aside.

Kairi Sane is one half of the current WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, but according to Dave Meltzer, there’s a good chance she might be leaving the company rather soon.

Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that Sane’s contract is up early next year, and unless she re-signs, or already has, she could be one of the next names to exit WWE and has expressed interest in doing so.

“Kairi Sane, I could definitely see her leaving. I don’t know that she’s gonna leave, but she’s definitely expressed interest in exploring other options.”

Of course, as Meltzer says, he doesn’t know for sure that she’s going to leave, but it’s the final clause of that sentence that would suggest it is certainly a possibility.

On top of that, Bushiroad head Takaaki Kidani recently expressed interest in signing Sane and Io Shirai to Stardom when their WWE contracts expire.

There has certainly been a markup in interest in WWE wrestlers wanting out of the company. Oney Lorcan and Sin Cara are the latest names to come to light having asked for their releases lately.

As mentioned, Sane is one half of the Women’s Tag Champions with Asuka as the Kabuki Warriors. Meltzer added that Asuka seems happy in the United States. Sane is also a former NXT Women’s Champion.

There won’t be a shortage of topics to discuss when “The New” Daniel Bryan joins The Miz for “Miz TV” this Friday night.

The former WWE Champion has appeared conflicted for weeks with the prospect of aligning himself with Sami Zayn and Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura. Now he’s also got “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt to worry about.

The Universal Champion took Bryan out with the Mandible Claw, appearing seemingly out of nowhere backstage when Zayn tried to finally pin Bryan down for a definitive answer.

Will Bryan finally have an answer? What will he have to say about the brutal attack at the hands of Wyatt? And let’s not forget about Bryan’s turbulent history with The Miz himself.

All the elements are in place for what promises to be a blockbuster edition of “Miz TV” — don’t miss it this Friday night on FOX at 8/7 C!

Nikki Cross can become the final member of Team SmackDown for the Five-Woman Survivor Series Elimination Match — but she’ll have to overcome SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley to do so.Lacey Evans joins team captain Sasha BanksCarmella and Dana Brooke, leaving one spot remaining on Team Blue — one coveted by WWE’s Twisted Sister. Banks doesn’t seem to want any part of teaming with her newfound rival, however, especially after both she and Bayley notched victories over Cross in recent weeks.

However, both of those wins came with each other’s assistance. Will the third time be the charm this time for Cross? Or will this bolder, edgier version of Bayley — with Banks likely not far behind — simply be too much once again for Cross to overcome? Find out this Friday night on FOX at 8/7 C!

The fourth member of the SmackDown women’s Survivor Series team for the 5 vs. 5 vs. 5 elimination match has been announced.

Lacey Evans joins Carmella, Dana Brooke and Sasha Banks as the first four to make the cut for the blue brand with one member still remaining.

Brooke and Carmella earned their spots by beating Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville in a tag match on SmackDown last week, whereas Banks and Evans didn’t have to ‘qualify’ for their spots.

WWE.com announced Evans’ inclusion:

The “nasties” of Raw and NXT are on notice as Lacey Evans has been named the fourth member of Team SmackDown for the Women’s Elimination Triple Threat Match at Survivor Series.

Evans joins captain Sasha Banks, as well as Carmella and Dana Brooke who earned their spots on the blue brand team with a victory over Fire & Desire last week. The addition of The Lady of WWE brings a whole new level of class to Team SmackDown and leaves one spot remaining on the squad.

Who will join Evans and complete the Team SmackDown roster for the showdown at Survivor Series?

A recent article in EducationNext by Kathryn Baron titled “Serving the math whiz kids” resurfaced a longstanding debate about whether bright kids will succeed even if not challenged enough.

Jon Star says: “We’re obligated to do a good job for both” [referring to both students performing below standard and to whiz kids] but also that “high-achieving kids are going to succeed even if they’re not challenged enough.” I think Jon Star is saying we should help all kids, but that we should probably help those performing below standard more because they need it more.

In response, Jonathan Plucker says “the data don’t bear out the notion that bright kids will take care of themselves…the goal should be that every student continues to grow.” See this Twitter thread, where Jonathan greatly expands on his comment and discusses the broader context and additional research and makes a strong case for why gifted kids need to be challenged.

I understand where Jonathan is coming from because it is true that many neglected gifted kids from disadvantaged backgrounds are not developing their talent to their full potential. I have written extensively on this topic and even interviewed Jonathan and Scott J. Peters about their book on Excellence Gaps in Education.

However, I want to examine some evidence that might support the idea that bright kids are likely to succeed even if not challenged enough, because understanding where an argument is incorrect doesn’t just require rebutting it with other evidence or perspectives, it also requires understanding whether the initial statement is reasonably supported, and to what extent.

Intelligence or giftedness is a key variable in helping talented kids from disadvantaged backgrounds improve their social mobility. A large body of work by Brent Roberts and colleagues “discovered that intelligence was crucial to helping students who came from disadvantaged backgrounds to catch up to their more advantaged peers.” See my interview with Brent here about this large body of research evidence.

Gifted or intelligent kids end up as healthy adults in midlife. This is the finding of a large body of research longitudinally investigating how intelligence assessed when young predicts later-life health and aging. See this article reviewing work by Ian Deary and colleagues.

Gifted individuals, overall, end up as psychologically well-adjusted. A century of research on gifted kids shows that these kids end up academically and occupationally successful, as indicated by the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth led by Camilla Benbow and David Lubinski.

This does not mean that gifted kids will not also grow with challenge (they will) or that an important group of whiz kids from disadvantaged backgrounds do not need our help (they do, like all other kids, but especially in comparison to advantaged gifted kids).

Overall, it is important to acknowledge that gifted kids from all backgrounds do have a head start in life. They are, after all, “gifted.” However, that does not mean we should neglect them or that they could not be much more successful if we helped them.

The debate among U.S. education scholars seems to be about which groups of kids have a larger head start than others within the gifted population (poverty can derail whiz kids too), and whether gifted kids as a whole will be “okay” relative to kids who are much more severely academically challenged from the start (those with lower academic ability).

As Chester Finn recently argued, gifted education faces “clear and present” problems. Based on a representative survey of the U.S. public by The Institute of Educational Advancement, Finn concludes about gifted education that “there’s widespread complacency about the enterprise in its present form.”
