Students with identified Learning Difficulties are supported in public schools through a range of services and programs in order for them to reach their full educational potential. This information provides an overview of these programs for parents and carers.

Parent/Carer Communication Pathway (Students with Learning Difficulties)

Parents and carers are encouraged to discuss their concerns about their child's learning with the school. There are two options for this discussion. They are outlined as a series of steps below.

Your child already has an identified learning difficulty by psychologist or paediatrician:

  1. You have concern about your child's learning.
  2. Your child already has an identified learning difficulty by psychologist or paediatrician.
  3. Share written documentation with teacher and request a meeting to speak further.
  4. At meeting review your child's current needs and potentially develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to document additional support
  5. Meet back with teacher regularly to discuss progress & update ILP as needed (at least 2/yr).

You are concerned but your child does not have an identified learning difficulty:

  1. You have concern about your child's learning.
  2. You are concerned but your child does not have an identified learning difficulty.
  3. Request a meeting to speak with the classroom teacher.
  4. At meeting, discuss concerns, current needs and existing support. Develop additional supports if needed. Schedule follow-up appointment (5-10 weeks later).
  5. Teacher interventions include evidence-based interventions.
  6. At follow-up appointment discuss if improvement has been made.
  7. If child has made improvement, continue working with teacher to maintain academic progress.
  8. At meeting review your childs current needs and potentially develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to document additional support.
  9. Meet back with teacher regularly to discuss progress & update ILP as needed (at least 2/yr).
  10. Communicate with the school team and school psychologist to discuss if a psycho-educational evaluation is appropriate for your child.
